Over 35 athletes from 10 countries are expected to participate, including over 15 National Champions, and the three-time World Sumo Champion, Byamba, who has won gold medals at the US Sumo Open for the past three years straight.

NOTE
For months, the US Sumo Open has been scheduled as part of a martial arts Expo in the Anaheim Convention Center. We entered into contract with that Expo, who promised us, in writing, the 5,000-seat Arena in the Convention Center, for the US Sumo Open competition.

THIS WEEK, the Expo folks wrote us that they had canceled their Convention Center plan, just days before the event. Needless to say, this was shocking news. We have worked very quickly to secure the Sheraton Park Hotel, on the same block as the Anaheim Convention Center. The US Sumo Open will take place in the Park Ballroom there, at the same time (11 AM - 3 PM) on Sunday, August 22.

We are happy to announce that athletes from all over this country and from overseas, are still competing, and that all officials, entertainment (taiko drummers), and other aspects of the US Sumo Open will remain intact! US Sumo Open sponsors will be present, including Hakutsuru Sake and Sapporo Beer, both of whose delicious products will be on sale during the tournament.

Keeping the US Sumo Open alive in just these past few days has truly been a miracle, and we want to extend a very sincere "thank you" to Steve Davis, of Ohana, for helping us to make the Sheraton plan happen!

We apologize to all of our sumo fans, in advance, for any challenges you may have this year, due to the change in venue. The situation with the Expo people was entirely out of our control. After 10 months of planning with us, they suddenly canceled the Convention Center plan and broke nearly all aspects of their signed contract, less than one week in advance.

Thank you all for your understanding and support. The 10th annual US Sumo Open will go ahead as scheduled, just a block away from the original location -- see you there!
